I work from home full time. I have been pretty successful for a number of years. I spend a lot of time every week coaching people and helping them move down the path toward financial freedom and success online. For every success story out there,
there are unfortunately many that are just struggling. The main issues I see in my coaching and mentoring students is lack of knowledge and lack of realistic expectations. I will cover some key points that I see over and over again below.

1. Want to believe the hype -- It is very difficult to sign up for working a business when you read every day that you can make tons of money by just signing up. This hype is everywhere, and is a major distraction. This is especially prevalent for people that are really struggling financially. People want immediate gratification, and this "position of need" makes a lot of people susceptible to "program jumping". Program jumping kills your momentum, your reputation with your downline and your bank account.

2. Do not want to believe the truth -- A home based business is hard work. It is very similar to starting a brick and mortar business. There is so much to do and so little time in each day. People just don't want to sign up for hard work. Once again, this makes people "sitting ducks" for hype programs that promise you the world.

3. No 90 day plan -- Most people I deal with are not used to running projects and setting realistic goals and time lines to attain them. This is a skill just like learning to write ads or load an autoresponder. If you do not have a 90 day business plan with goals, you almost certainly are going to fail. "I want to make a bunch of money quick", does not qualify as a reasonable 90 day goal. People with no game plan fail, almost 100% of the time.

4. Limited time -- People want to "shoe horn" their business in between a job and having a real life. The first thing to go is sleep, and then people have a strong tendency to burn out. If you have a plan, and that plan is realistic, you will not try to do 25 hours of work in a 24 hour day. I tell people they should have 10 to 20 hours per week to devote to their business.

5. Limited skills -- This one is a constant business killer. If you do not have online marketing skills, you will most likely fail if your business is online. Everybody needs to develop skills in marketing, closing and follow up at a minimum. That is a lot of stuff for people to learn, especially if they are time constrained.

6. Want to network vs work -- I see a lot of people get caught up in "social hour" online. If you are just "shooting the breeze" with your team mates, you are not building your business. There is fine line between real work and social hour. You need to make sure you are working on "income producing activities".

7. No small wins to keep them going -- People need to win. It is just a lot more fun than losing. If you do not see any small wins in your business, you will not be able to stay focused and hit your short and intermediate term goals. You need to set "no matter what" goals, and make sure you meet them... period.

8. Hoping for versus ensuring success -- This is one that consumes a lot of time and energy from people that do not know exactly what they are trying to do to build their business. People check email, back offices and genealogy trees "hoping" that some success has come their way. This is very destructive behavior, and will destroy your confidence if you function this way for long. You need to set yourself up for success and make sure you are doing some things that will give you small successes along the way. You need to hit these "sign posts" along the way, so you know what your results are going to be. Once you start to ensure success versus hoping for success, you will have control over your business and will make great strides in your performance.
